Every year on New Year's Eve, more than a million folks gather at One Times Square to see the yearly "New Year's Eve Ball Drop." The New Year's Eve ball is dropped on a flagpole above the building which celebrates the New Year with millions of folks nearby and from different nations viewing on television and all together counting down. American flags really do have a rockin' classic way to celebrate the New Year.
From the time when the first ever ball was dropped on December 31, 1907 at Times Square, it has been the place for the most improtant New Year's festivity in New York City. Hundreds of thousands of folks gather together that night to see the Waterford Crystal ball being dropped. It took the place of an extravagant fireworks display that has run from 1904-1906, but only to be forbidden by city authorities. Throughout the 2nd World War, one minute of quiet and a recording of church bells ringing took the place of the ball drop due to war blackout restrictions.
